The Other Half
If you had asked ten-year-old me what I was going to be when I grew up, I probably would have said "archaeologist." At some point shortly after, I watched a documentary on these individuals pulling themselves through a small tunnel to the main underground chamber of a pyramid, and I knew that it was NOT going to be me down there.
It took many twists and turns for me to figure out what was next. It was not until I ended up working as a "Customer Service Representative" at a local banking institution (read: teller) for minimum wage that I knew I had to do SOMETHING. I had taken loads of English courses when earning a Liberal Arts degree at a two-year school, but my choice of English degree at the private school I left just didn't sit well anymore. Was I going to run out and write a book or become an editor? I had no idea where I would land, so I decided to follow in the steps of some family. After all, teachers got summers off and banker's hours, to boot.
I have always been a Type-A personality. Organization, order, following rules, efficiency, and perfectionism is built into my DNA. Teaching was a great fit, until it wasn't. Last December, I made a rather earth shattering decision to leave my pension-paying, decent-salaried, insurance carrying post to find another opportunity.
Now, I am helping Travis build the business that we have dreamed about. We believe in using our passions to better not only our lives, but the lives of those around us. If we aren't using our gifts, we aren't fulfilling our purpose in this world. To make a long story short, Travis was shafted out of what I think should have been his destiny-architecture; he got his second chance when he got involved in the cabinetry designing world. While he is amazingly gifted at problem solving, creativity, and even the construction side of design, he has his flaws when it comes to business. For example, bookkeeping is not his strong suit. A messy pile of receipts is likely on the passenger seat of his truck at any given moment. I'm not saying they never make their way into a file, but it isn't on the top of his priority list. It is where I have stepped in. My obsessive-compulsive characteristics love to take charge in those areas that maybe aren't his strengths. On the flip side, while I've surely held up some sheetrock and swung a hammer here or there, my best contribution to Spencer Family Enterprises is the behind-the-scenes work. Creating some marketing imagery, talking about budgets, and, certainly not least, encouraging my husband in following his destiny. Cheesy, perhaps, but it's literally my job right now to rally beside him and make our dreams come true while also making clients' dreams come true. What an amazing opportunity!
If there's one thing I would like you to know about who we are, it is that we are authentic. We don't put on airs or pretend to be better or worse than we are. We are hard-working, goal-oriented, checklist finishing individuals who value our family and a job done well with all of our being. We aren't happy until those around us are happy, and we would love nothing more than to prove it to you!
Thanks for reading!
Shawna.
